YEAR 11 & 12 INFORMATION PROCESSING AND TECHNOLOGY
CATEGORY: AUTHORITY
PRE-REQUISITES :
At least a B standard in Mathematics and English in Year 10 is desirable. Interests in the design of software programs is essential.
INCOMPATIBLE SUBJECTS : Nil
Whilst the students will use computers throughout the year, this may only be for 50% for the duration of the course. The focus of this subject is the nature of computer studies and on the THEORY and DESIGN of computer software.
This subject is not about learning word processing, spreadsheeting, game development or web publishing.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Information Technology refers to the creation, manipulation, storage, retrieval and communication of information, and to the range of technological devices and systems used to perform these functions. It is an intellectual discipline that involves the study of information systems (eg. databases), software and system engineering (modelling and programming), human-computer interaction (design), and social and ethical issues associated with the use of computer technology. Students will be exposed to a variety of intellectual challenges associated with the use of computer technology, throughout their two years of study.
Why Study Information Processing And Technology ?
IPT assists students in understanding the rapid rate of change associated with Information Technology and to appreciate its impact on society and the individual. It enables students to investigate the nature of computer systems and to learn about the design and methodology used to create a variety of computer software programs.
ASSESSMENT PROGRAM:
In each semester, a variety of assessment tasks are used to assess the student’s level of understanding in this subject. These items may include written essays, reports, exams and projects.
Year 11 is largely a skill building year where students learn basic design principles and programming concepts, and does not contribute to the student’s Exit Level of Achievement. In Year 12, all assessment items contribute to the student’s Exit Level of Achievement.
