Music excellence
Pimlico offers a Program of Excellence in Music, commencing in Year 7. Students within the program are grouped in the same Music classes in Years 7 and 8 and are provided with opportunities for extension and enrichment using a curriculum based on the Australian Curriculum and incorporating elements of AMEB music theory. Further opportunities for extension continue beyond Year 7 and 8. All Music Excellence students must also be involved in the school's instrumental music or vocal programs.
Music Excellence students are expected to play a lead role in the school's ensembles and participate in a wide range of school and community events. Music Excellence students are also provided with further opportunities for extension and enrichment through workshops and masterclasses with visiting musicians and ensembles and through involvement in key music events such as the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. The program places a strong emphasis on building and enhancing students' vocal and instrumental performance and musicianship skills.
Entry into the Program of Excellence is by application and shortlisted students will be required to participate in an audition/interview process. Students are selected for the program based on their level of skill and musicianship in relation to their selected instrument (including voice) and on their knowledge and application of music theory. There is also scope for a limited number of students who have not previously had the opportunity to play a musical instrument to also join the Program of Excellence in Music. These students will be assessed on their music theory and on their demonstrated commitment to other school or community activities and must demonstrate a willingness to take up an instrument that represents an area of need within the school's ensembles.
Pimlico's Program of Excellence in Music is recognised within our school's Enrolment Management Plan and, as such, places in the program are available to students from outside of the school's defined catchment area. A Program of Excellence in Music Application Form is provided in the Pimlico State High School Enrolment Pack. Students applying for entry to the program should also indicate this at the appropriate place on their Enrolment Application Form.
