Pimlico State High offers sailing as an
extra-curricular activity in Term 1. Participation is welcome whether students
are experienced sailors or are completely new to sailing. Year 7 students are especially encouraged to
join. Pimlico has its own fleet of ‘Pacer’ sailing dinghies to practice and
compete in.
Activities include an official ‘Start Sailing’
course for new sailors then twice-weekly practice for all sailors leading up to
a round of North Queensland School Teams Sailing Interschool Regattas. If
weather permits, the season ends with an “adventure sail”. Sailing practice and
training takes place in the sea at Pallarenda or at Townsville Sailing Club.
Sailing is a great way to learn new skills,
have fun with friends and enjoy the fantastic outdoor environment!
The Pimlico School Sailing Program is run
by a group of parent volunteers with the help of teacher Ms Colleen Newnham,
who acts as a school liaison for the program. Parent assistance with setting up
boats is greatly appreciated – we’re happy to ‘show you the ropes’. Team
sailing commences the third weekend of Term 1. Students should listen for
information about meetings at school. If parents wish to know more – they can
contact Ms Newnham on cnewn10@eq.edu.au
, or email the Pimlico Sailing Committee at pimlicosailing@gmail.com to go on the mailing list.
