Community Education Counsellor

The Aboriginal and Islander Community Education Counsellor provides pastoral care and support, and advocacy for indigenous children within the school community.

The person provides :

  • educational counselling and support services to Aboriginal and Islander students within the school
  • participates in the development of activities, in and out of school, likely to enhance the involvement in the education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families
  • build links with appropriate networks (eg. family services, health)
  • make home visits to parents of students within our school community
  • monitor student attendance and achievement
  • assist teachers in developing appropriate teaching strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • assist teachers in incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies in their subject areas and provides advice on appropriate resources
  • attends ASSPA meetings (Aboriginal Student Support and Parent Awareness Programme)
