The Aboriginal and Islander Community Education Counsellor provides pastoral care and support, and advocacy for indigenous children within the school community.
The person provides :
educational counselling and support services to Aboriginal and Islander students within the school
participates in the development of activities, in and out of school, likely to enhance the involvement in the education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families
build links with appropriate networks (eg. family services, health)
make home visits to parents of students within our school community
monitor student attendance and achievement
assist teachers in developing appropriate teaching strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
assist teachers in incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies in their subject areas and provides advice on appropriate resources
attends ASSPA meetings (Aboriginal Student Support and Parent Awareness Programme)
